Teeth whitening is a dental procedure that can get rid of stains and make your teeth look whiter. This has become one of the most sought-after dental services today because of the excellent cosmetic results. Indeed, teeth whitening can drastically improve the look of your teeth and leave you with a beautiful smile.
How Do Teeth Get Stained?
The color of our teeth can depend on many different factors. Genes play a part in it as well. Some people naturally have whiter teeth than others because of their genetic makeup. Other things that can influence the color of your teeth include consuming teeth-staining foods such as coffee and teas.
Similarly, tobacco smoking, certain drugs, and an excess of fluoride can also affect the color of your teeth.
Our teeth’s enamel has tiny holes or pores in it that can retain the stain and make the overall appearance looks yellowish.
How is Teeth Whitening Done?
At Wellness Dental Studio, teeth whitening is a simple and comfortable process. There are two ways this can be undertaken: vital whitening and non-vital whitening. Vital whitening is performed on teeth that are viable and have a live nerve supply, while the latter is done on teeth that do not have a live nerve supply or have had a root canal treatment done.
Vital whitening is a short 30-60 minutes process that makes use of a gel that is directly applied to the teeth. This gel has a potent whitening agent, usually hydrogen peroxide.
This is followed by using a special laser that activates the gel which bleaches the teeth more quickly.
This complete process may need to be repeated on several appointments depending upon how stained your teeth are. Typically, most people will need about 2 to 3 appointments.
Non-vital whitening is a less effective procedure and may not have the same whitening effect as vital whitening. This is done by whitening the tooth from the inside and leaving the whitening gel in for a few days.
How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last?
One important thing to remember about teeth whitening is that this is not a permanent treatment. You will need to get the treatment done again after a few months.
For most people, the effect will last for about 6 to 12 months, depending on how well they take care of their teeth. Smoking and consuming too much caffeine can result in the teeth getting stained again quickly.
Is Teeth Whitening Safe?
Teeth whitening is a safe and painless procedure that is unlikely to cause any complications. However, your teeth may become sensitive for a short period of time following the whitening treatment.
If your gums feel sore or painful, you should check in with our dentists for a follow-up.
